My Double Edge Razor Blade Collection

One thing about wet shaving is how collectable the things are. Razor blades come in so many different brands, different production blades for different regions and come in largely varying prices.

I'll update this page constantly when I get my hands on a new brand/blade. I hope to let you guys know where you can get these blades and please comment if you know where to get other blades or if you know other places that sell them! I'll post them here so that everyone knows where to get them. I really hope to find more places that sell 100 pack blades as they are a lot more economical.

Within less than a 2 months of shaving with a safety razor, I managed to get myself a variety of blades brick and mortar shops around Singapore. Sadly, it is not easy to find specific brands as most of these shops do not have an online profile. What I did was to search forums indicating what people have found so far.

Zorrik Super Platinum

Blades: 5 packs of 5 blades.
Price: $1.30
Price per blade: $0.052
Location: Haniffa Textile Pte Ltd (Along Dunlop St.)
Rarity: Quite a lot at where I bought it! Sells in 5pack package only.

My impressions: Not tried yet.

 Lasco Super Stainless

Blades: 5 packs of 5 blades.
Price: $2.80
Price per blade: $0.112
Location: Haniffa Textile Pte Ltd
Rarity: Quite a lot at where I bought it! Sells in 5pack package only.
Blade uses: 3

My impressions: Shaved once. Seemed rather sharp. Had several nicks when I used it for the first time. The second shave was also memorable because it was really smooth too! It seems to age a little faster than the Rimei because the tugging was more prominent on the 3rd shave when going against the grain. It helps when I follow the proper sequence of going with the grain, followed by across the grain and finish off by going against the grain. This cut me a few times when I was rushing.

This blade starts off pretty sharp. While it noticeable degradation happens after 3-4 shaves, it holds up for another 8 shaves before requiring more pressure to shave. During the last 8 shaves, it was difficult for me to determine when it should be discarded because it aged very gracefully. Now that I started with my 2nd Lasco blade, it reminded me how sharp it is by cutting me while shaving with the grain. My 3rd use of the blade was a lot more consistent. Its been more than 8 shaves already and still feels sufficiently sharp. Pretty good.

 Vidyut Super-Max Platinum

Blades: 200 blade package
Price: $12
Price per blade: $0.060
Location: Mustafa Shopping Centre (Farrer Park)
Rarity: Lots have come in since the last time I went hunting in Mustafa.

My impressions: Not tried yet.
 Vidyut Super-Max Stainless

Blades: 5 packs of 5 blades
Price: $1.50
Price per blade: $0.060
Location: Haniffa Textile Pte Ltd
Rarity: Quite a lot at where I bought it! Sells in 5pack package only. Several shops along Little India sells them in individual packs for $1.00 each.

 My impressions: Not tried yet.

Super-Max Super Stainless "blue"

Blades: packs of 5 blades
Price: $0.90
Price per blade: $0.180
Location:Pasar Malam at Macpherson
Rarity: Saw a lot at the stall I bought it from, but I never seen it again. But then, there so many other Super-max blades around.
Blade use: 5

My impressions: Initial impression wasn't good as the print on the blade had almost completely faded. Just had my first shave and gosh, its a really loud blade and it did short work of my 3 day old whiskers without any nicks. The 1st shave is comparable with the LASCO and Rimei in performance. Not sure if I can tell them apart. Slight tugging on the 2nd shave but surprisingly little irritation when applying my aftershave splash.

I must say that I have a strange feeling about these blades. Firstly, the faded ink on the blade. Secondly, the blade is slightly wider than others, making it difficult to fit my razor back in its container. Thirdly, the print quality on the pack is also very poor, which is quite unlike my other Super-Max variety blades. It does have the a slightly different hologram than the Super-Max Vidyut too. Sadly, information surrounding this blade is quite limited.

Put in my 2nd blade into my Rimei razor and it was just slightly bigger than other blades. The blade bends drastically at one after tightening down. Maybe it would work better on other razors

Blades: 100 blade package
Price: $15
Price per blade: $0.150
Location: Mustafa Shopping Centre (Farrer Park) / Haniffa Textile
Rarity: Quite a lot at where I bought it No fear of this getting discontinued.

My impressions: On my first with-the-grain pass, it was so sharp and smooth that it felt as if I had no blade in my razor. Subsequent passes were just as enjoyable and I didn't have to repeat the same much to get it completely clean. I look forward to see how many shaves a single blade can give me.

Rimei Platinum

Blades: 100 blade package
Price: US$14.40
Price per blade: US$ 0.144
Location: dealextreme
Rarity: Available online! Yeah! But I have yet to find it locally. Suspect it can be cheaper!
Blade use: 1

My impressions: My first blade. Very rough on the first shave but silky smooth on the second. Thought that it wasn't shaving at all until I saw the stubble in the foam. Lasted 10 shaves. It was the first blade I started off with and I really liked it. I would buy a 100 pack once I'm done with the pile of blades I have.

 Derby Extra Stainless Steel

Blades: Pack of 5 blades
Price: $1.00
Price per blade: $ 0.20
Location: Provision shop along Belilinos Rd (Little India)
Rarity: Again, this is the only shop I found selling these blades. This is my first pack of blades that come in a plastic cover.

My impressions: Not tried yet.

 Lord Cool Super Stainless Blades

Blades: 5 Pack of 5 blades
Price: $1.90
Price per blade: $ 0.08
Location: Haniffa Textile Pte Ltd
Rarity: Haniffa Textile seems to be bringing in quite a good stock of a variety of cheap blades as of April 2014

My impressions: Not tried yet.

 Lord Classic

Blades: 5 Pack of 10 blades
Price: $3.80
Price per blade: $ 0.08
Location: Haniffa Textile Pte Ltd
Rarity: Haniffa Textile seems to be bringing in quite a good stock of a variety of cheap blades as of April 2014.

My impressions: Another excellent yet inexpensive blade from Egypt. More than 5 shaves in and it still performs just as well as the first time - smooth and forgiving. The only times I bled was because I ran it over a small pimple. Otherwise, the lack of sting when I put on my alcohol based aftershave speaks for itself. If inexpensive blades perform this well, I certainly look forward to reviewing the higher priced blades.

Astra Superior Stainless Double Edge (paper packaging)

Blades: 5 Pack of 5 blades
Price: $2.50
Price per blade: $ 0.10
Location: Haniffa Textile Pte Ltd
Rarity: Haniffa Textile seems to be bringing in quite a good stock of a variety of cheap blades as of April 2014.

My impressions: Not tried yet.

Astra Superior Stainless Double Edge (plastic box)

Blades: Pack of 5 blades
Price:$0.90
Price per blade: $ 0.180
Location: A household hardware shop near Jubilee building (Ang Mo Kio)
Rarity: Paper or plastic box, is there any difference?

My impressions: Not tried yet.

 Gillette Silver Blue

Blades: Pack of 5 blades
Price: $0.80
Price per blade: $0.16
Location: A night market at Woodlands MRT. Night markets from different locations seem to carry different brands, as I have observed.
Rarity: Seems like most night markets carry this.

My impressions: Not good. Felt blunt right from the first shave and did not improve in subsequent shaves. On the flip side, the usual sting I come to expect when applying aftershave to my mustache area was non-existent. I even had to dab a little more of my alcohol based aftershave to check if I had indeed enough of it to my mustache area. Despite this upside, the bluntness of the blade reminds me of dreadfully expensive multi-blade razors that had been used too many a time and I didn't like it. I still have 2 more packs of these and I hope to use them up as soon as possible. Never again will I give this another try when there are so many wonderful inexpensive blades around.

 Croma Diamant

Blades: 5 pack of 10 blades
Price $7.50
Price per blade: $0.150
Location: Mustafa Shopping Centre
Rarity: Only found at Mustafa so far. Many available.

My impressions: A respectable blade. Smooth blade overall with a very long lifespan. Think I shaved with one for about 3 weeks (i.e. 11 shaves) until I forgot to wipe it dry, causing it to rust. Take care of it and it will take care of you.

 Super Gillette Blue Blades

Blades: 5 pack of 5 blades
Price: RMB5 (SG$1.00)
Price per blade: $0.20
Location: Wet market at Xin Hui Town of Guangzhou, China
Rarity: Not available in Singapore

My impressions: I read some forums complaining about how bad these were. But to me, they felt great from the start. It seemed to have a nice balance of sharpness and comfort right from the first shave, which is not usually the case. However, they seem to lose sharpness by the 2nd week (about 7 shaves).

Dorco Platinum ST-300

Blades: 5 pack of 5 blades
Price: $0.80
Price per blade: $0.16
Location: Supermarket at Golden mile complex
Rarity: Supposedly quite abundant from the internet. But this was the first time I saw it being sold here in Singapore.

My impressions: Not tried yet.
 Feather Hi-Stainless Double Edge

Blades: 5 pack of 5 blades
Price: $1.80
Price per blade: $0.32
Location: Supermarket at Golden mile complex
Rarity: According to internet chatter, Golden mile is the only place that sells this.

My impressions: I had to try it the moment I had my hands on this legendary blade that had received high praises from shavers worldwide. Had to dedicate a full length blog post on this one. In summary, it is awesome and is exactly what you would expect from a high quality Japanese product.

I don’t suppose many of websites give this kind of information.

Just want to say thanks Leo. Thanks to your highly detailed and helpful review of the blades, i went down to Haniffa to check it out, and got quite a big haul. They don't carry the Zorrick anymore, but a nearby shop along the same street by the name of 'Sellapas' carried it, along with other brands.

Looking forward to trying it on my 'Viking Blades chieftan' razor, and my soon-to-be-arriving, Gillette Tech Ballend and Gillette Fat Boy Adjustable :)

Thanks again man...and keep up with your interestingly thought-through posts.

Have a fun weekend man.

Hi Ed, great that this post helped. I find that most blades work really well for me. Maybe asian facial hair is not as tough as western & middle eastern's. Both Haniffa Textile and Mustafa Centre carry a good variety of blades. Sad to hear that Haniffa stopped carry Zorrick. Hope they are in a middle of a restock and not gone forever.

Thanks for sharing! Do let me know if you decide to post a review on your new razors!

Cheers!
